How does it work?

Purchasing a Standard Insurance Health Policy

A standard health policy has variables for each person. Other than basics of gender and age, many issues should be considered.

When we think about our bodies, we don't usually think about preventative maintenance as we would a vehicle. We purchase a vehicle, do our oil change every 3,000 miles or 3 months, flush the radiator and transmission each year, replace brake pads, change spark plugs, windshield wipers, and all the other things that keep it running and well tuned. But every 5 to 10 years we trade that vehicle in and start over with a new one. We can't do that with our bodies. Our body is our vehicle designed to carry us through our life from the day we are born, until we die. The average life expectancy in the United States is 78 years. That is why it is important to pick a health policy that will cover the needs of your life.

When we look at our health policy, we should make sure that it covers every aspect of our current health and what we can expect in the future. The first thing to think about is preventative maintenance; will it cover an annual physical? Having an annual physical will check your body from head to toe once a year to make sure you're in good health and catch anything wrong before it can become a bigger issue. Things that you need to discuss with your doctor and think about when choosing coverage include smoking, alcohol consumption, the amount of time you spend in the sun (are you at risk for skin cancer), eating habits, and family history, which covers a wide area of medical issues that could be passed on to you. Many medical problems like obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and a wide variety of diseases and types of cancer, can all be traced through heredity and genetics.

Oddly, the main part of a health policy that most people look at is the emergency coverage. They think more about injuries from sports or accidents around the house. People tend to worry more about the 'what if' factor of life and plan for that, instead of planning and living a healthy life. The average person will spend more money for treatment from sickness, caused by bad health in their later years of life, than they will from an injury or accident. We need to recognize and plan for that now while we are still young.
